Google's Hamina data center campus, located in Hamina, Finland, is a significant digital hub that has evolved from a former paper mill. The campus includes the newly purposed-built DC7. Leveraging seawater from the Bay of Finland for its cooling system and featuring a new offsite heat recovery facility, the Hamina data center is at the forefront of Google's sustainability and energy-efficiency initiatives. Google has invested €3.5 billion in the region to date, with the first data center opening in 2011. In 2023, Google achieved 98% carbon-free energy usage in Finland. A notable collaboration with Haminan Energia has established an offsite heat recovery project, expected to meet an estimated 80% of local demand, contributing to warming homes and businesses. In 2024, Google announced a €1 billion investment in Finland, focusing on sustainability and AI goals, and the construction of a seventh data center in Hamina.
