Located in Hamina, Finland, Google Hamina - DC1 is part of a campus that has transformed a former paper mill into a digital data hub. Established in 2011, this facility leverages a unique cooling system that utilizes seawater from the Bay of Finland. A significant aspect of its operation is a new offsite heat recovery facility, developed in collaboration with Haminan Energia, which aims to supply heat for local homes and businesses, contributing to reduced environmental impact. Google has invested €3.5 billion in the Hamina region to date, underscoring a long-term commitment to community growth. In 2023, Google achieved 98% carbon-free energy usage in Finland, with a substantial portion matched by contracted CFE within the Finnish grid. The facility's development began in 2009 with the purchase of the Summa paper mill.
