Google Hamina - DC4

Google's Hamina data center campus, located in Hamina, Finland, is a significant digital hub built upon a repurposed paper mill. The campus includes the newly purpose-built DC4 facility. A key feature is its advanced cooling system utilizing seawater from the Bay of Finland, alongside a new offsite heat recovery facility, underscoring Google's commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. The Hamina site was chosen for its skilled local workforce, the potential to repurpose existing infrastructure, and the right energy infrastructure mix. To date, Google has invested €3.5 billion in the region. In 2023, Google achieved 98% carbon-free energy usage in Finland. A notable initiative is the heat recovery project in collaboration with Haminan Energia, aiming to supply an estimated 80% of local demand for heating homes and businesses. Google's presence in Hamina began with the purchase of the Summa paper mill in 2009, followed by the opening of the first data center in 2011. Recent announcements in 2024 include the construction of a seventh data center and a €1 billion investment in Finland focused on sustainability and AI.
