Google Hamina - DC2

The Google Hamina - DC2 data center, located in Hamina, Finland, is part of a larger campus and represents a significant investment of €3.5 billion to date. Originally built in 2009 on the site of a former paper mill, the facility opened in 2011. It is at the forefront of Google's sustainability efforts, employing a cooling system that utilizes seawater from the Bay of Finland. Additionally, a new offsite heat recovery facility, developed in collaboration with Haminan Energia, aims to supply an estimated 80% of local demand, reducing environmental impact and warming homes and businesses. In 2023, the Hamina facility achieved 98% Google carbon-free energy usage in Finland. Google continues to expand its presence in Hamina, announcing the construction of a seventh data center and a €1 billion investment in Finland toward sustainability and AI goals in 2024.
