Jefferson Lab Data Center

The Jefferson Lab Data Center (JLDC) is a new, purpose-built facility located on the Jefferson Lab campus in Newport News, Virginia. This 30,000 sq ft (2,787 sqm) data center is designed to support high-performance computing and data management for nuclear physics and other scientific disciplines within the DOE Office of Science. It includes a 10,000 sq ft (929 sqm) data hall and 10,000 sq ft for infrastructure equipment. The JLDC is a foundational step towards realizing the High Performance Data Facility (HPDF), a DOE-led project awarded to Jefferson Lab in partnership with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia with $43.3 million and $6 million in seed funding, the facility is right-sized for science and specifically engineered for high-performance scientific workloads and data stewardship, differentiating it from commercial data centers. It will enable advanced data analysis, networking, storage, and AI-enabled discovery as part of the Genesis Mission, advancing priorities in AI for science and energy.
