UVA Fontaine Data Center

The University of Virginia (UVA) is planning a new research data center located at the Fontaine Research Park in Charlottesville, Virginia. This new facility is intended to alleviate capacity constraints at UVA's existing data center, which is approaching its maximum operational limit and causing delays for researchers. The proposed data center will have an initial IT capacity of 4MW, with plans for future expansion to 16MW. The project involves an investment of $72 million. A key feature of the new facility will be its integration with the adjacent Fontaine Energy Plant, utilizing geothermal heating and cooling and allowing for the repurposing of waste heat on the park grounds. The university aims for a 2029 opening date, with construction slated to begin in 2026. This initiative is crucial for maintaining competitiveness in faculty recruitment and retention by ensuring access to necessary computational resources.
