Riverbend Technology Center

The Riverbend Technology Center, proposed by TerraWatt, aims to redevelop the former 381-acre Alton Steel mill site in Alton, Illinois. This grid-powered data center project will clear mill buildings, manage site cleanup, and construct a secure facility for computer servers. The development plans for an initial 200 MW block, with potential expansion up to 1 GW, contingent on Ameren Illinois' grid capacity. TerraWatt requests no local tax incentives and projects significant property tax revenue for the city and school district. The data center is designed to be significantly quieter and use substantially less water than the former steel mill, with lower air emissions. The project is expected to create approximately 4,846 construction jobs and 50 permanent jobs, contributing to the local economy and providing new revenue streams for city services and schools.
