SK Group and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are partnering to develop South Korea’s largest AI-focused data center in Ulsan.
Located in the Mipo National Industrial Complex, the facility will house 60,000 GPUs and will be built in phases. The first phase will deliver 41MW of capacity by November 2027, expanding to 103MW by February 2029. Future expansion could bring the campus to 1GW.
The site was chosen for its proximity to SK Gas’ LNG combined heat and power plant, ensuring access to large-scale electricity. The facility may also utilize LNG cold energy for cooling.
SK Telecom and SK Broadband, subsidiaries of SK Group, are leading the AI data center initiative. SK Group plans to invest 3.4 trillion won ($2.5bn) in AI by 2028, while AWS is expected to contribute $4bn to the project.
An inauguration ceremony is planned for June 2025, with groundbreaking scheduled for August 2025.
AWS already operates a cloud region in Seoul and is constructing another data center in Seo-gu, Incheon. This Ulsan facility will further expand AWS’s presence in South Korea’s AI and cloud infrastructure market.
