Pangea-5 Supercomputer

The Pangea-5 Supercomputer, situated at TotalEnergies' Jean Féger Scientific and Technical Center (CSTJF) in Pau, France, represents a significant advancement in high-performance computing. This new system, a collaboration between TotalEnergies, Dell Technologies, and Nvidia, is slated to come online in 2027 and will provide six times the computing capacity of the existing Pangea infrastructure.

Primarily deployed to enhance seismic imaging for hydrocarbon exploration, Pangea-5 will also support AI-driven research across integrated power modeling and other demanding computational tasks. The hardware leverages Nvidia GPUs, CPUs, and InfiniBand networking for massively parallel processing, with Dell managing the design and installation.

Notably, Pangea-5 is engineered for improved energy efficiency, reportedly using approximately 40 percent less power than its predecessor at equivalent performance levels, and reducing cooling energy requirements by a factor of five. Waste heat generated by the system will be integrated into the CSTJF campus's district heating system.

This marks the fifth iteration of TotalEnergies' HPC systems at the Pau campus, which has been operational since 2013. The Pangea name draws inspiration from geological theories relevant to hydrocarbon exploration. The supercomputer aims to accelerate discovery, increase operational efficiency, and support the energy transition.
