Qarnot’s Kankaanpää data center in Finland represents one of the company’s earliest international deployments of its digital boiler technology. Installed in partnership with Finnish energy provider Vatajankoski, the site began operations in early 2020 with the first QB•1 digital boiler, with nine more units planned for rollout.
These digital boilers are compact, liquid-cooled computing modules that perform high-performance computing (HPC) tasks while simultaneously heating water. The recovered heat is integrated into local district heating systems, serving residential and commercial buildings in the region. This approach not only offsets traditional heating energy sources but also reduces the carbon footprint of data processing.
The Kankaanpää deployment is part of a broader European initiative to demonstrate how waste heat from IT infrastructure can be reused efficiently. Qarnot’s model is particularly well-suited to colder climates like Finland, where demand for hot water and heating is consistent year-round.
