In 2018 Google announced plans to establish data center presence near Data Center Alley, more precisely in Leesburg in Loudoun County.
In 2019 the first of two data centers were opened, representing a $1.2 billion dollar initial investment.
Around 2021 the second data center was opened.
Google chose Loudoun County due to its robust energy infrastructure, available land and tech-savvy workforce.
