Amazon AWS is planning to develop a significant data center campus, codenamed Project Spectrum, in Somervell County, Texas. The proposed site is adjacent to Vistra's Comanche Peak nuclear plant. The development agreement with Amazon Data Services, an affiliate of Amazon, has been motioned forward by the Somervell County commissioners court.
The project is expected to encompass approximately 435 acres and could feature up to 18 two-story buildings. A tax abatement application suggests a potential investment of $5 billion. Construction is anticipated to commence in 2027.
Under Texas's Chapter 381 agreements, the county and developer can negotiate incentives. The agreement includes a $2.5 million payment to the county upon project groundbreaking and an annual payment of $300,000 per building. Somervell County is located about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth, with Glen Rose as its county seat.
