TAC Data Centers, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based The Ardent Companies, has proposed Project Cardinal—a 600MW hyperscale data center campus in Great Falls, Montana. The development is planned for a 569-acre site adjacent to the AgriTech Park, near Malmstrom Air Force Base and the Rainbow Power Substation. Envisioned as a 2 million sq ft facility, the campus would include up to 20 single-story buildings, supported by two on-site substations (one utility-owned, one company-owned).
The project represents an estimated $1–1.5 billion investment, with construction expected to begin in 2026 and initial buildings coming online by late 2027 or early 2028. Full buildout is anticipated by 2030. While no end-user has been named, the site is undergoing entitlement and is currently in the transmission queue with Northwestern Energy for grid interconnection studies.
Project Cardinal is one of 12 active TAC developments across seven U.S. states, part of a 3GW+ pipeline. In a state with limited data center presence, the initiative is seen as a catalyst for regional energy development and digital infrastructure growth—potentially delivering tax revenue, job creation, and industrial diversification to Cascade County.
