Oakland University Data Center

Oakland University is undertaking a significant data center project in Rochester, Michigan, aimed at resolving critical technological deficits and expanding its computing capabilities. The new facility, a proposed colocation Edge facility with an estimated capacity of 20 to 26 megawatts (MW), will support next-generation teaching and research, strengthen data security, and foster industry collaborations. The project prioritizes sustainability, exploring waste heat recovery and efficient cooling systems. Developed in partnership with Fairmount Properties, the facility will be built and operated at no extra cost to the university, with Fairmount handling maintenance and operational issues. OU will retain dedicated space for its AI Institute and compute infrastructure, ensuring academic and research needs are prioritized. The project is expected to create at least 30 full-time jobs and offer student internship opportunities.
