PowerTransitions is repurposing the Quindaro power station in Kansas City, Kansas, into a data center. The 85-acre site, previously a fossil-fueled power plant, will be transformed into two data center buildings utilizing existing infrastructure. The facility is expected to require 192MW of power annually over a minimum 20-year lifespan. The redevelopment process includes environmental remediation, demolition, and modernization of the site.

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City is currently reviewing a purchase agreement for the property. If approved, PowerTransitions will pay $100 for a 60-day due diligence period, followed by $100,000 for a one-year option to market the site, with an additional $250,000 extension for a second year. The company would then purchase the land at $160,000 per acre, minus demolition and cleanup costs. The estimated remediation expenses total $20 million, covering the removal of hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead, and industrial waste.

PowerTransitions specializes in converting retired power plants into sustainable infrastructure. The company is backed by EnCap Investments, a major energy transition fund. The Kansas City project is expected to be ready for data center construction by 2027–2028, significantly faster than a greenfield development, given current supply chain delays pushing new builds to 2029 or later. If completed, the facility will contribute to the region’s growing digital infrastructure while repurposing an underutilized industrial site.
