The Applied Digital Adair County Data Center is a proposed 200MW facility planned for southeast of Adair, Iowa. The project, estimated at $1.5 billion, will feature two 300,000-square-foot buildings adjacent to the NextEra Energy substation, which is connected to regional wind farms. Applied Digital aims to leverage the area's infrastructure to support AI-driven workloads and hyperscale cloud services.
The facility is expected to employ 40-70 full-time staff, with additional 50-200 construction workers during the building phase. While the center will initially require 200,000 gallons of water, officials state that long-term operations will have minimal impact on local water supplies. The data center will connect directly to MidAmerican Energy’s grid, ensuring that local electricity customers are not affected.
Despite its potential economic benefits, the project has faced community concerns regarding noise, zoning regulations, and land use. Adair County officials are considering setback ordinances to address these concerns, with a public hearing scheduled to discuss the matter. If approved, the facility will contribute to Iowa’s growing AI and cloud computing infrastructure.
