Surge Development is planning a large-scale data center campus in Hancock County, Indiana. The proposed 775-acre Hancock County MegaSite will be a data center and industrial complex, though the exact number of facilities has not been disclosed. The first phase of development is expected to include five buildings and a substation. The site is located 15 miles east of downtown Indianapolis, near the Indianapolis Regional Airport, and spans multiple county roads.
The project is part of a broader effort to attract high-tech infrastructure to the region. Surge Development CEO Chris King has emphasized the national security interests supporting AI and the potential for Indiana to play a key role in this sector. While no specific end-user has been named, representative images in submitted documents feature Google facilities, suggesting potential interest from major tech firms. The land is currently zoned for agricultural use, but the Hancock County Comprehensive Plan indicates manufacturing-related development as a future possibility.
Local residents have expressed concerns about the impact of the project. Tuttle Orchards, a nearby farm established in 1890, has voiced opposition, stating that the development could alter the character of the area. The proposal is scheduled for review by the Hancock County Area Plan Commission on May 27, where further discussions on zoning and community impact will take place. If approved, the campus could become a significant hub for data center operations in the Midwest.
