The proposed natural gas-powered data center in San Jose, California, is a groundbreaking project by Terra Ventures, designed with sustainability and innovation at its core. Located on a 9.3-acre site in the Alviso district, the facility will feature two buildings: a three-story, 295,100-square-foot data center and a 167,400-square-foot energy supply hub. The project aims to utilize natural gas-powered fuel cells from Bloom Energy as its primary power source, eliminating the need for traditional backup generators.

The design incorporates advanced technologies, such as absorption chillers that use waste heat from the fuel cells to generate chilled water, reducing cooling energy requirements by up to 70%. The facility will also employ DC power directly from the fuel cells, minimizing energy losses from AC conversions. A second phase of the project includes plans for a greenhouse heated by the data center, which will grow fruits and vegetables for a community retail store.

This innovative approach aligns with Arcadis' vision of creating near net-zero data centers, emphasizing energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. The San Jose data center is set to become a model for sustainable digital infrastructure, balancing high performance with environmental responsibility.
