Carbon3.ai is planning a modular AI data center located in Duckmanton, Derbyshire, United Kingdom, near the M1 motorway. The facility is proposed for a site adjacent to the Erin Landfill and Erin Powerplant, which recovers energy from the landfill.

Carbon3.ai intends to power the data center modules using off-grid renewable energy generated by the adjacent facility. The company states the data center will be of "strategic regional and national importance," delivering critical sovereign AI computing infrastructure for the UK to address the national requirement for secure, sustainable, and accessible high-capacity digital computing resources.

Launched in September, Carbon3.ai aims to provide sovereign AI infrastructure for the UK, powered by off-grid renewable energy. The company has announced partnerships with HPE, Vast Data, and WWT to develop a "national grid for AI" and plans to deploy a nationwide mesh of data centers. Carbon3.ai claims to have 50MW of available capacity and a pipeline of 4.5GW, with plans for four hyperscale data centers and a network of 30 "rapid deployment sites" around the UK.
