LHR data centers are part of the eu-west-2 AWS region: Europe (London).
Amazon AWS is developing a new data center facility located at Unit 3, Maylands Avenue in Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom. This facility, identified as a tape library data center, is designed to host tape storage systems for long-term data archiving. According to the filing, this specialized function will result in significantly lower power and water consumption compared to typical data centers of similar size. The planned building will be a two-story structure totaling approximately 1,935 sqm (20,840 sq ft) on a 0.6-hectare plot. The data center will incorporate chilled-water cooling systems, utilizing free-cooling for most of the year, and will feature a small 8.55kW solar system. Backup generators will be powered by HVO. The site was formerly a Post Office government storage depot and has been vacant since the early 2010s.
