The Killellan AI Growth Zone is a transformative infrastructure project located on a 184-acre former oil rig factory site near Dunoon, Scotland. Led by Argyll Data Development Ltd, it aims to deliver up to 2 GW of hyperscale data center capacity powered entirely by on-site renewable energy sources including wind, wave, solar, and hydrogen. The project is designed to operate initially off-grid using vanadium flow batteries and modular systems, with future integration into national energy networks.
Supported by a global consortium including Schneider Electric, Lenovo, and the University of Strathclyde, the initiative seeks £15 billion in investment and is expected to generate over 2,000 construction jobs annually and 1,200 permanent roles. It features marine fibre connectivity to Ireland and North America, and will host real-time AI applications across energy, logistics, and infrastructure. The first data center will also manage a microgrid initiative linking up to 32 Edge data centers across the UK.
A key innovation is the reuse of waste heat from data operations to support vertical farming, aquaculture, and district heating, aligning with BREEAM sustainability standards. This circular approach enhances biodiversity, reduces fossil fuel dependency, and supports local food production. The Killellan AI Growth Zone positions Argyll as a strategic hub for AI, renewable energy, and regenerative development in the UK.
