Apatura, a UK-based renewable energy developer, plans to build a large-scale data center campus at the former Ravenscraig Steelworks site in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The site spans approximately 160 acres and is part of a wider regeneration effort.
The proposed project includes a 550MW data center and an integrated battery energy storage system (BESS), with a total investment estimated at £3.9 billion (about $5.34 billion). The target timeline for bringing the facility online is 2030.
Apatura aims to utilize constrained renewable energy from wind and solar sources in Scotland that would otherwise be curtailed. The BESS component will help balance supply and ensure consistent power availability for data center operations.
The site, known as SevenFourEight, is located east of the Wishaw Deviation freight railway line. It is part of the Ravenscraig masterplan and is fully grid- and land-secured. Apatura is working in collaboration with North Lanarkshire Council and landowners Ravenscraig Ltd.
This project is positioned as a candidate for the UK Government’s AI Growth Zone initiative. If accepted, it would support the development of green digital infrastructure tied to artificial intelligence.
Apatura, founded in 2014, holds a portfolio of 10.6GW in grid-secured energy projects. Approximately 1.8GW is earmarked for data center developments. The company is led by Giles Hanglin, with Michael Hunter—formerly of Google—heading its data center strategy.
Ravenscraig is one of five AI-ready sites Apatura is pursuing across central Scotland. Another planned development includes a 200MW data center in Cumnock, East Ayrshire.
