Ultra-protected data center

Formerly housing a command and control centre for the Swiss Air Force, the rock chambers of the Deltalis data center provide a huge space with extreme stability, tested in recent live measurements. The computer room consists of three large chambers built into the granite rock. Each chamber houses three floors each at least 4 metres in height.
Multiple pressure doors (40cm thick), UPS, diesel generators, fire protection, alarm monitoring, multiple access security measures and redundant power supply are designed in line with Tier IV ratings according to Uptime Institute.


Reliable long-term electricity supply

Canton Uri, the electricity provider, produces a large enough surplus of hydroelectric power to be an energy exporter, so continuity of long-term electrical supply is assured.


Resource efficient through nature and technology

Geological conditions keep the temperature in the chambers close to 18 degrees C (64 degrees F) all year round, and innovative energy-saving technology uses heat from the computer room to drive the air handling system. For much of the year the Deltalis data center will operate in free cooling mode.
An additional system is in place that will use a large natural reservoir of underground water for cooling. Waste heat energy can be piped and reused for district heating. This system is unique within Switzerland, will greatly improve energy reuse efficiency (ERE) and further reduce an already very low CO2 footprint.


Low CUE (carbon usage) data center operation

The Swiss canton of Uri is the electricity supplier to the data center. Producing 1’500 Mio. kWh per year from 13 hydroelectric plants, Uri exports electricity, and contributes greatly to Switzerland’s high carbon efficiency in electricity and heat generation (Switzerland emits 26g of CO2 per kW hour compared with over 430g in Germany and 500g in the UK - www.iea.org figures).
