The CERN Meyrin Data Centre, located in Meyrin, Switzerland, serves as the central hub for CERN's scientific, administrative, and computing operations. It hosts critical services such as email, scientific data management, and videoconferencing.
As of June 2022, the data center housed approximately 9,500 servers, 444,100 processor cores, and 103,500 disks, with a storage capacity of 634 PB on disks. Magnetic tapes are utilized for long-term storage, holding 424 PB of data. The facility consumes 3 megawatts of computing power, with an additional megawatt for cooling.
The Meyrin Data Centre plays a vital role in managing the immense data generated by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It aggregates LHC data, performs initial reconstruction, and archives copies to tape storage. A second network hub was inaugurated in Prévessin in 2017, and a new data center in Prévessin is scheduled to come online in late 2023, complementing the Meyrin facility which will focus on data storage.
