Kakao Ansan Data Center is South Korea’s first in-house facility built by Kakao, located on Hanyang University’s Erica campus in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province. Spanning 47,378 square meters (~510,000 sq ft), the hyperscale data center is designed to support 120,000 servers, ensuring stable operations for Kakao’s digital services, including KakaoTalk.
The facility was first announced in 2020, with an investment of 400 billion won ($336.6 million). While partial operations began in 2021, full construction was completed in September 2023, and the center officially launched in Q1 2024. It features solar panels on its exterior and incorporates a four-step fire extinguishing system to prevent incidents like the 2022 SK Group data center fire, which caused a major outage for Kakao.
Kakao Ansan Data Center serves as a critical foundation for AI research, big data processing, and corporate cloud services. The company is also planning a second independent data center with a stronger focus on AI technologies in the coming years.
