Google Azores CLS

Google is developing a new cable landing station (CLS) and accompanying data center in Lagoa on São Miguel Island in the Azores. The facility, located in the Tecnoparque da Lagoa industrial park, will span approximately 15,000 sqm with a planned power capacity of 10MW. Construction is already underway and will support Google's Nuvem and Sol subsea cables, which are designed to improve transatlantic connectivity between Europe, Bermuda, and the United States.

The Nuvem cable will link Portugal to Bermuda and the US, while the Sol cable connects Spain to the US via the Azores and Bermuda. These systems are aimed at enhancing global network infrastructure and offer redundancy and bandwidth expansion across key Atlantic routes. The Lagoa site will act as a strategic interconnection point for Google's broader subsea cable ecosystem.

This initiative marks Google's investment in Portugal's digital infrastructure, bringing hyperscale connectivity to the Azores and reinforcing the region’s importance in international data traffic flows. It also aligns with efforts to decentralize critical telecom pathways while supporting local development within the Tecnoparque technology hub.
