As per new regulations effective April 1, 2025, data centers with a total electrical power exceeding 2 MW are required to conduct a cost-benefit analysis for the utilization of surplus heat. PolarDC DRA02, with its planned expansion, falls under this mandate.
The cost-benefit analysis is being prepared by the consulting firm Sweco, which has experience with similar projects, including work for Google. Input for this analysis has been provided by Drangedal municipality, Drangedal kraft, and Telemark county municipality, covering aspects like land management and stakeholder assessments. The analysis will be submitted to and approved by Norway's Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) before construction commences. The completed analysis is expected to be published on the municipality's website.
