Stargate Norway is a major AI infrastructure initiative launched by OpenAI, Nscale, and Aker ASA. Located in Kvandal near Narvik in Northern Norway, the facility is designed to deliver sovereign, scalable AI compute across Europe. The site will be powered entirely by renewable energy and is expected to house 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by the end of 2026, with initial plans for 230MW capacity and potential expansion to 520MW.
The project aligns with European regulatory standards and supports OpenAI's "OpenAI for Countries" program, marking its first such deployment in Europe. The location benefits from abundant hydropower, low transmission strain, and naturally cool temperatures, creating favorable conditions for sustainable high-density computing. Nscale and Aker will jointly own the site, committing around USD 1 billion to the initial 20MW phase and preparing for significant future scaling.
