Government Communications Security Bureau

The Mātai Data Centre, located at RNZAF Base Auckland in Whenuapai, New Zealand, is an all-of-government facility operated by the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB). This new data centre represents a significant advancement in New Zealand's secure digital infrastructure, designed for the processing and storage of the nation's most sensitive government information.

The facility's design and location were influenced by New Zealand's unique environment and specific data storage needs. A key partnership in its development involved mana whenua Ngati Whātua o Kaipara, who gifted the name Mātai, derived from an ancestral Pā site.

The New Zealand Defence Force provided integral support, with the data centre situated within the Whenuapai base perimeter, ensuring a high level of security. As the government's lead agency for information security, the GCSB manages the Mātai Data Centre, supporting the digital safeguarding requirements of the wider public sector and bolstering national data security and resilience.
