The Soya Green Data Center I, located in Wakkanai, Japan, is a new green data center initiative by Toyota Tsusho Corporation and its group company, EURAS ENERGY HOLDINGS. This facility is designed to be directly connected to the adjacent Kamoaka Wind Farm, receiving "raw green electricity" directly via a dedicated transmission line. This direct connection makes it the first data center in Japan to be powered this way.
The project aims to address the challenges of high renewable energy potential in the Soya region, coupled with insufficient local electricity demand and grid capacity. It also responds to the growing global demand for data center power, driven by AI, and the need for renewable energy sources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By decentralizing data centers away from urban areas like Tokyo and Osaka, the Soya Green Data Center I contributes to reducing grid load, promoting local consumption of renewable energy, and enhancing business continuity.
The data center will be built on a 9,900 square meter site with a receiving capacity of 3MW. While the wind farm provides the primary power, a system will be in place to procure additional renewable energy if needed, ensuring a stable 100% renewable power supply. Construction is slated to begin in April 2026, with full operation expected in 2027. Future plans include developing larger-scale data center projects in the region.
