White Data Center (WDC)

White Data Center (WDC), located in Bibai City, Japan, is a pioneering data center that leverages stored snow for cooling its servers. This innovative approach, originating from a city project to harness the cooling power of snow, began commercial operations in April 2021. WDC aims for zero CO2 emissions by using meltwater and antifreeze circulated from a snow heap to cool the facility. The waste heat generated is repurposed for aquaculture, with current operations focusing on eel farming, and potentially other agricultural uses. The current facility houses 20 racks, with plans for a second, larger data center with 200 racks. This initiative not only reduces cooling costs by over 50% compared to conventional methods but also contributes to the regional revitalization of snow-prone areas in Japan by transforming snow removal from a cost into a valuable resource.
