Amazon AWS is developing a hyperscale data center, the Thane Campus, on a 54-acre plot in Thane, India. This significant acquisition, costing over Rs 1,870 crore, was finalized on October 21, 2022, with Amazon paying a record stamp duty of Rs 130 crore for the registration. The land was previously acquired by Kalpataru Group for approximately Rs 300 crore in 2004 and 2010. This development is part of Amazon Data Services India's broader expansion strategy in the region, which includes other land acquisitions and long-term leases for data center purposes in Mumbai and Thane. The growth of data centers in India is driven by increasing digitization, data localization norms, and government policies aimed at simplifying regulations and improving infrastructure, positioning India as a key market for global data center investment.
