Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB)

The ZIB/HZB Berlin-Adlershof data center, a joint initiative by Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) and Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB), is being established in Berlin, Germany, to bolster high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for research.

The project, revealed on March 27, will be developed in stages. Initially, ZIB will consolidate its existing infrastructure, which will then be operated on behalf of partners. Concurrently, a new site with expanded hardware will be set up at the HZB Berlin-Adlershof location. Future phases plan for additional computing capacities, contingent on the evolving needs of the scientific community.

This new data center aims to provide the essential digital power infrastructure for modern research, particularly in fields like materials, health, and climate science, where data processing is increasingly critical. It is designed to enhance the technological independence and resilience of Berlin's research hub, supporting ZIB's vision of advancing modeling, AI, and HPC as cornerstones of scientific progress. The facility will foster a collaborative environment for data-intensive research, emphasizing powerful, flexible, and secure operational models. For HZB, this collaboration is crucial for advancing data-driven materials science and strengthening the IT infrastructure supporting its BESSY II light source and future BESSY III.
