Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is involved in a significant data center development project in Kärppäsuo, Ii, Finland. The project, a collaboration with Valoa Networks Oy and the municipality of Ii, aims to establish a large data center area near the Herva substation. The designated planning area spans approximately 1,160 hectares, with 475 hectares specifically allocated for data center operations. This initiative is recognized as nationally significant, supporting digitalization, sustainable growth, and clean transition goals. Fingrid will provide a strong grid connection and reliable electricity transmission from the new Herva substation, expected to be completed in 2027. The project is strategically located in North Ostrobothnia, close to clean electricity production. The development process includes master planning, detailed planning, and environmental impact assessments, with zoning anticipated to conclude in 2027. An investment decision has not yet been made.
