Basslink Pty Ltd

Basslink Telecoms is the ONLY alternative Network Owner and Operator capable of providing Managed Services and Wholesale Transmission from Victoria to Tasmania other than Telstra.

The Basslink Interconnector is the world’s second longest undersea electricity cable. Owned by Keppel Infrastructure Trust, Basslink delivers excellence in the areas of safety, reliability and performance.

All services are fully protected across Basslink Telecoms network against single component failure by virtue of the fault tolerant ring architecture of Basslink Telecoms network. This protection applies from Basslink Telecoms POP to Basslink Telecoms POP.

In 2007, Basslink committed to the creation of Basslink Telecoms, using the assets of the HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) Interconnector and was operational by July 2009, when the first customer generated traffic flow from Melbourne to Hobart.

Basslink Telecoms has been responsible for:

Delivering infrastructure based competition in backhaul transmission between Victoria and Tasmania resulting in improved wholesale backhaul pricing
Providing carrier grade reliable bandwidth options for primary, secondary and redundant links to customers wanting to protect there network availability and deliver complete end to end diversity
Breaking the incumbent monopoly on backhaul, kick-starting the NBN activity in Tasmania and Victoria
Effectively disaster-proofing the Tasmanian telecoms market at an infrastructure and carrier level

The Network

The Basslink HVDC Interconnector is integral to Basslink Telecoms and extends from Traralgon, Victoria to Georgetown, Tasmania.

Basslink Telecoms network consists of over 900km of optical fibre cable carrying traffic between Melbourne and Hobart.

With 10 Point of Presence (POPs) throughout Victoria and Tasmania including 4 carrier grade Points of Presence (PoPs) in pre-established carrier grade data centres located in Melbourne and Hobart.

Protection and Diversity

Under the Bass Strait, the Basslink HVDC Interconnector is buried 2m under the seabed, inherently protecting the optic fibre cable from any potential shipping threat or marine disaster.

The network is also built to be electronically redundant to the maximum extent possible, thereby eliminating the risk of single card failure in the network.
