Capital Power

Capital Power is planning to develop two large-scale data centers at the Genesee Generating Station in Alberta, Canada. These facilities will be co-located with the power plant, leveraging its natural gas-powered electricity for high-performance computing and AI workloads.

The planned data centers will have a combined capacity of 1.5 gigawatts, with one facility requiring 1,000 MW and the other 500 MW. These projects are part of Alberta’s growing data center market, which is attracting significant investment due to its deregulated electricity market, abundant land, and fiber-optic infrastructure.

Capital Power has already begun site preparation at Genesee, signaling strong confidence in the project’s viability. The company is actively engaging with hyperscalers and major data center providers to establish these facilities. While specific timelines for construction and operation have not been disclosed, the initiative aligns with Alberta’s broader push to become a leading hub for AI and cloud computing.
