111 Eight Avenue was opened in 1932 as an inland terminal and warehouse, and hence was constructed for heavy loads with 14.5 foot high ceilings and heavy freight elevators. In 1997 it was acquired by Taconic Partners, who started promoting it as a carrier hotel for telecom and data center use, due to its very suitable building layout and ideal location with multiple fiber networks. Around 1/3 of its space was rented out to telecom related companies.
In 2010 Google acquired the property. Since it became known as The Google Building and Googles east coast head quarters. It remains a prime interconnection point and data center location, for the US east coast.
