Google Kronstorf

Google is advancing plans for a large data center in Kronstorf, Upper Austria, nearly 17 years after first buying the land. The company originally acquired around 70 hectares in 2008, later selling part of it to local authorities, leaving about 50 hectares for its own use.

The site sits between Vienna and Salzburg, close to the River Enns and nearby hydroelectric plants. This location offers access to renewable energy and water for cooling, which aligns with Google’s sustainability goals.

Permit applications have been submitted to both the Linz-Land trade authority and the municipality of Kronstorf. Preparatory work, including excavation and cooling infrastructure, is already underway.

The design is expected to include multiple server halls spaced for heat management, with a river-water cooling system. Once approved, construction will proceed in phases, marking Google’s first data center in Austria and expanding its European footprint.
