Firmus George Town, also known as Long Reach Data Centre, is an AI cloud and data center development by Australian firm Firmus, located at Lot 1 East Tamar Highway, Long Reach, Tasmania. This project, formerly considered for the Gunns Pulp Mill, aims to be an 'AI factory' with plans to construct two purpose-built AI data hall buildings, an office building, and a maintenance workshop on an existing cleared industrial platform.
The facility is designed to draw approximately 288MW of power and will utilize direct-to-chip liquid cooling. The site benefits from existing infrastructure, with three 220kV high-voltage power lines operated by TasNetworks running through it. Firmus's broader 'Project Southgate' initiative focuses on deploying sovereign compute in Australia for AI training and inference, with a long-term goal of deploying 1.6GW of capacity by 2028. Founded in 2019, Firmus has evolved from a focus on crypto and high-performance compute to specializing in AI factory construction.
