Project Ares is a proposed gigawatt-scale, behind-the-meter hyperscale AI data center campus located at Murranji Station in the Barkly Region of the Northern Territory, Australia. Developed by Energy North Pty Ltd, the project aims to provide specialized infrastructure for the AI economy, designed to Formula 1 pit lane specifications. The campus will feature up to 3GW of solar generation, 16GWh of battery storage, and 900-1.1GW of natural gas-fired dispatchable generation, operating entirely off-grid with no connection to the main electricity network. The initial phase targets 500MW, with potential to scale to 5GW in future phases. Project Ares is co-located with Project Sol, a green hydrogen and green ammonia development. The project has been awarded Commonwealth Major Project Status and is undergoing environmental assessments. Connectivity to the Asia Pacific region will be facilitated through Northern Australian fibre routes.
